Colorimetry is used to determine the concentration of a coloured species accurately. Mass spectrometry and Infrared spectroscopy are techniques that can be used to help identify compounds and to determine their structure. Students learnt how to determine the structure of an unknown carbon compound by a combination of analytical methods.
