Over the past few weeks our students in upper primary (Year 3, 4 and 5) have launched the Writer\u2019s Workshop<\/strong>. Our young writers have started the year discussing what it is that makes them successful writers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Writer\u2019s Workshop approach to teaching language is that we become better writers when we practice our skills in a real and authentic way<\/strong>. We know from research and experience that students become better writers when they have agency <\/strong>\u305d\u3057\u3066 choice <\/strong>in their writing projects. At the same time, we provide all our young authors with strategies and tools to become more independent <\/strong>writers. For instance, in class discussions so far this year, we have shared ideas of how brainstorming and a clear writing plan can help us take charge of a story and write with a clear purpose. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the most important teaching in Writer\u2019s Workshop happens in our one-on-one conferences<\/strong>. During a conference, a student sits down with one of their teachers to discuss their writing. Our job as writing mentors is to suggest a valuable next step for our young writers that fits their personal needs<\/strong>. Feedback is the most helpful when it is tailored exactly to the needs of the individual student. Often, we look at examples from other writers: we hunt for ideas in published books and get inspiration from the writing projects of our fellow students. At other times, we brainstorm ideas together to find exciting new opportunities to improve our texts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5728\u8fc7\u53bb\u7684\u51e0\u5468\u91cc\uff0c\u6211\u4eec\u9ad8\u5e74\u7ea7\u7684\u540c\u5b66\u4eec(\u4e09\u5e74\u7ea7\uff0c\u56db\u5e74\u7ea7\u548c\u4e94\u5e74\u7ea7)\u5f00\u59cb\u4e86\u201c\u4f5c\u5bb6\u5de5\u4f5c\u5ba4\u201d<\/strong>\u3002\u6211\u4eec\u7684\u5c0f\u4f5c\u8005\u4eec\u4ee5\u8ba8\u8bba\u201c\u662f\u4ec0\u4e48\u9020\u5c31\u4ed6\u4eec\u6210\u4e3a\u4e00\u540d\u6210\u529f\u7684\u4f5c\u5bb6\u201d\u6765\u5f00\u59cb\u8fd9\u4e00\u5b66\u5e74\u3002 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

MYP English Language Acquisition  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students started the year getting familiar with the English vocabulary connected to family, house, personal identity, and ethnic identity. The units are tailored to accommodate the needs of different English levels and ages.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Year 6 has been learning about families, their roles, and the members they may include. Additionally, students have been studying a variety of house items and specific actions to support a better understanding and command of these terms. A blend of grammar, reading, writing, and listening skills have been addressed. Real-life situation videos have been provided to support vocabulary and conversations.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students in upper levels have been focusing more on personal and ethnic identity. They identify the features that make them stand out and the common ground they may share with their schoolmates. Students evaluate the positive traits that built their individuality and what makes them Chinese, Korean, Japanese, etc. They look at the final fusion considering all the pieces that bring them joy and all they detest. As a result, they see themselves as a puzzle, with bits they can change and adapt to suit their needs, and bits that are permanent. They may see the freedom they have as young people to change aspects of their behaviour, to become better versions of themselves. They can consider growing into better friends, better athletes, better students, knowing that the strength to shrug off any inner challenge lies inside.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the CSD class, Hailey from DSE 11 and her team members presented the materials they had collected around the theme of “The change of people’s lifestyle after the reform and opening up”. After that, other students rated the performance of the group and expressed their own suggestions and ideas. I am so glad that the whole class was very active in this activity, which all showed their ability to express themselves and cooperate with each other.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n
